Diablo 2 Countess Drops
IntroductionNihl is an excellent boss to run repeatedly in Diablo 2. First, he is very easy to find as all the maps leading to him are preset. You don’t need a map hack to find him easily and quickly. Second, he drops D Keys at a rate of 1 in 12 runs on average. The Countess/Summoner drops their keys at a rate of 1 in 24. Third, Nihl is one of only a few bosses that can drop ANY item in the game (except for a torch or anni). People tend to not run Nihl in Hardcore because he is considered extremly dangerous.
The reality though is that all of the big dangers in running Nihl can be mitigated making running him relatively safe and therefore quite profitable. Let’s first discuss the dangers that we’ll have to deal with along with the appropriate counter measures.Nihl Farming DangersNihl Fire Enchanted (FE) – If Nihl is FE and you are too close when he dies he might take you with him! This is easy to avoid though. Simply make sure you check his mods to see if he is FE.
If he is then make sure your merc delivers the final blow and that you are at a safe distance when that happens. In addition, you should be wearing a Dwarf Star for fire sorb and either Infero Strides or Hot Spurs to increase your max fire resistance. If possible you should also have max block.
Nihl is best run by a Hammerdin but you can use a Tele Summoner or a Light Sorc if you are a very experienced player. You should also have a minimum of 3k health. Any lower is too dangerous.Nihl’s Corpse Explosion (CE) – Nihl can pop a corpse resulting in massive damage to you. To mitigate this you should wear as your second ring a Natures Peace which has the modifier Rest in Peace (RIP). This will prevent Nihl from poping any corpse that you create while you are killing his minions.
Your merc can still create usable corpses but there won’t be many and most likely Nihl will die before he can set off more than 1 CE. Because you’ll have fire sorb and a high fire resistance you’ll be relatively safe even if he pops something near you.Be extra careful though if you get cursed with Amp Damage. His CE can really hurt under this curse. I recommend removing this curse by going to town before engaging in the final fight with Nihl. If Nihl himself is the one cursing you then you’ll just have to be extra careful.
Never let your health bulb dip below 75%. Use Rejuvis if needed to keep it up.
Nihl’s CE usually kills players who let their life get too low before he pop’s a corpse.Nihl’s Pit Vipers – Most players fear the Pit Vipers the most. They deliver what seems to be massive damage and the way it is applied seems mysterious. This threat too can be mitigated though by understanding how the damage gets applied and by adjusting your gear. When the tomb vipers fire their poison missiles, about a second later they leave an invisible “cloud” that does massive physical damage to anything that moves through it, namely you. The cloud applies 41-55 physical damage every frame that you move in it. That’s at least 1,025 damage per second if you don’t do anything about it.To mitigate this you can make sure to move out of the path of the poison missle within 1 second of them firing it at you.
Remember, just because the missile hits you and poisons you doesn’t mean you’ll take the high damage. It’s the invisible cloud that appears 1 second later that does that so just move out of the path before a 1 second count and you’ll avoid the cloud.Another option is to stand still while in the cloud. You only take damage if you are moving while in the cloud so stay put for a 3 second count after the missle flies by you. You can attack monsters while in the cloud just don’t run anywhere.

Hold the shift key down while you attack to make sure you aren’t moving around.The last way to mitigate this damage is through gear. Integer Damage Reduction (IDR) will reduce or possibly eliminate the damage. Nature’s Peace provides around 10 IDR. You can get more easily by socketing your gear with Sol runes, each of which give you 7 IDR. Socket your Helm and your Shield with Sol runes to get 24 IDR total and you’ll take the sting out of the Pit Vipers attack.
Give your merc a Gladiator’s Bane/Iron Pelt armor and a Tals mask, both socketed with Sol runes and he’ll be fine too.How to Find Nihl Quick and EasyFirst you have to get the WayPoint in the Halls of Pain. Once you take the WayPoint and enter the Halls of Pain there will be 3 possible maps that will spawn. Below are the 3 possibilities along with the route you should take to get to the stairs. In the picture below there are 4 sections I’ve highlighted green. The pattern with the red eyes will only show up in 1 of the 4 sections. Whichever arm the pattern shows up on is the arm Nihl will be down. So if the pattern shows up on the top/left section then Nihl is down the arm to the top/left. Pretty easy.The pattern may also show up on other walls but disregard them. It only matters which 1 of the 4 specific areas below has the pattern as only 1 of them will and that will show you where Nihl is.ConclusionNihl is very easy to find as shown above. Once you get good at running him it’ll literlly only take about a minute to do each run.
There are dangers to be aware of but you’ll be fine if you just keep the following rules in mind:. Don’t be near Nihl when he dies if he’s FE. Increase max fire resists to at least 85% and wear a Dwarf Star for fire sorb. Wear a Natures Peace for RIP and IDR. Socket both your helm and shield with a Sol rune for more IDR.
Have your merc wear a Gladiators Bane/Iron Pelt and a Tals Mask both socketed with Sols. If a viper shoots a missle at you, you have about 1 second to leave the path the missle followed. If you can’t move away in time then don’t walk/run (you can attack using shift key to keep yourself in place). If you don’t run/walk then you won’t take any of the damage.
